24 November 2010 13:07

On 22-24 November 2010, Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov paid an official visit to the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.

In the Libyan capital city of Tripoli negotiations were held with the Secretary of the General People's Committee (prime minister) of Libya al-Baghdadi Ali al-Mahmudi and the Secretary of the General People's Congress (parliament speaker) of Libya Mohamed Abul Quasim al-Zwai. The two heads of government presided over the 5th Session of the Ukraine-Libya Bilateral Cooperation Commission.

Attention was focused mainly on the issues of trade and economic cooperation. According to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, the trade turnover, which had amounted to approximately USD 110-million over the nine months of 2010, did not fully correspond to the two countries' potentials. The parties agreed upon the necessity to look for ways to deepen engagement in this sector.

Among the principal results of the negotiations, deals were reached on cooperation in high-technology sectors: nuclear power production, aircraft engineering, shipbuilding, and peaceful use of outer space. The parties discussed the prospects of further cooperation in the oil and gas, agricultural, healthcare, and education sectors as well as of involvement of Libyan investors in privatization of public-sector facilities in Ukraine and implementation of promising infrastructure projects.

Considerable attention was devoted to assisting Ukrainian companies, particularly construction firms, in obtaining profitable contracts in Libya as well as to helping Ukrainian medical staff working in Libya under private contracts overcome the problems they are facing.

Within the framework of sojourn of the Ukrainian delegation in Libya, political consultations were also held presided over by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Euhen Mykytenko and his Libyan colleague, Muhammed Siyala. Ukrainian and Libyan entrepreneurs discussed the prospects of their cooperation at a business forum organized for the purpose.

Draft Agreement on Visa-Free Travel of Citizens Holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports was initialled. The parties signed the Memorandum on Cooperation between the Ukrainian National Information Agency UKRINFORM and the Libyan Official News Agency JANA as well as the Agreement on Cooperation between the Kyiv Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Tripoli Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture.
